DIVINE MERCY IS INBUED WITH EXEMPTION CLAUSES
The unequivocal content of the book of Deuteronomy chapter 7 verse 2 states: ‘and when the Lord thy God shall deliver them before thee; thou shalt smite them, and utterly destroy them; thou shalt make no covenant with them, nor shew mercy unto them’.
Because the Lord our God is a God of extreme kind mercy, I am of the strong view that no one reading the concluding part of the foregoing verse will simply gloss over it without such a person’s attention being sustained for a moment.
Can it ever be true that God will instruct people to cease from showing mercy to a specific group of people? The truth is that there are exemption clauses maintained as condition for most things.
In this connection, divine mercy too is inbued with such exemption clauses. Exemption clauses are statements of condition which deviate from the general rule. It is a statement of general fact that the mercy of God is universal, not limited to any race or creed. But in certain circumstances, the One who has the prerogative of mercy can maintain a defining stand on the issue of mercy.
The troubling fact is, should God outlaw mercy from being beneficial to a person or persons and should any of God’s children or people offer mercy to such person or persons, the consequences for such action is always so dire. This is why the Lord expects that in showing mercy to any person especially persons outside the household of faith (Gal.6:10), we must be Spirit-led and deeply discerning (Jd.1:22).
Not everyone deserves the mercy of God. God has defined in certain circumstances certain people who will never have access to His mercy. Persons who kill or subject Israelees to slavery, harsh treatments, etc, are under divine curse. Should any one extend mercy to such killers or support charity organisations which show mercy to such killers, such a person assisting or donating to such charity organisations will be punished by God. For it is written: ‘I will bless those who bless you, and I will curse those who curse you’ (Gen.12:31).
If you give your money to persons who are involved in halting the spread of the gospel of Christ; if you offer your money to persons who kill Christians or who are given to killing people generally, by the dint of your giving or offering of money or assistance, you have brought yourself under divine judgment. It is the good counsel of the Lord to show mercy to the poor, the needy, the handicapped, but even then please be prayerful and discerning in so doing. Have you ever asked yourself why your finances are bombarded by challenges? Have you ever asked yourself why your prayers for financial change does not seem to travel beyond the roof of your house?
Check the things you use your money for and the people you give your money to. Because if you are careful and spiritually discerning, you may discover that your money sometimes is being used for rituals against you or against other people.
IN THE END, REMEMBER THIS: THAT ‘MONEY REPRODUCES MONEY’, THAT GIVING MUST HAVE LIMITS BECAUSE TAKERS NEVER HAVE LIMITS AND ARE SOMETIMES NOT DESERVING OF THE OFFERED GIFT. THAT THE MORE YOU GIVE DOES NOT ALWAYS MEAN THE MORE YOU WILL RECEIVE. RATHER, THE MORE YOU GIVE RIGHTLY AND ACCORDING TO GUIDED DIVINE PRINCIPLES, THE FAR MORE YOU WILL GET. PLEASE KEEP GIVING BUT BE DISCERNING, MAKING A DISTINCTION ALWAYS.

When was the last time you gave some thing to support God’s work apart from your tithes and offerings? When was the last time you supported any man to fulfill a purpose? When was the last time you put smile on the face of someone?
